CASE STUDY
TOTAL PILE COATED: 2,203 PILES
  • Scope One, 1,083 piles
  • Scope Two, 290 piles
Additional scope of work awarded to repair 830 piles applied prior with another coating
METHODOLOGY
  • Pile was blast cleaned with sand to remove contamination i.e rust and loose scale
  • Pile was blast cleaned to achieved cleaning standard of SA 2.5 with surface profile of 50 to 70 micron of anchor profile
  • First coat, the primer was applied to 150 micron
  • Second coat was applied to 300 micron
  • Third coat was applied to 300 micron
2017 INSPECTION
10 years since initial coating, the client was invited to inspect the signs of corrosion and effects of marine growth on coating.
SELEECTION CRITERIA
  • Pile selection was based on selection of piles in Berth 1, 2, 3 & 4 with potential coating damage
  • 4 piles fully cleaned by removing all the marine growth (scraping method) up to 1.5 meter below water line
  • Approximately 20 piles were cleaned partially and inspected underwater.
  • The inspection was witnessed by the jetty maintenance team
CONCLUSION

After 10 years since its application in 2007/2008:

  1. Conditions of Alocit coatings above water and in the splash zone (to EL (-) 1.5m) of jetty piles are excellent, with minor damage (less that 10%) due to corrosion and some mechanical contacts.
  2. Rust was observed at some pile caps where Sikadur sealant was applied, possibly due to corrosion or rebars inside concrete walkways.
  3. Marine fouling did not penetrate coatings in the splash zone until now.
